Socks for Seniors OK
MISSION
Socks for Seniors OK mission is to provide personal items, including but not limited to socks, for Senior citizens, most of whom are in local nursing homes at Christmas time. Often these Seniors have no local family members or limited interaction with their families and can feel lonely or forgotten during the holiday season. Socks for Seniors OK volunteers want to make these Seniors feel special and remembered by delivering, to the facilities, holiday bags which contain a pair of socks (the most needed item for most seniors in elder care facilities), and other personal care items, like toothbrushes, lip balm, hand soap, lap blankets etc. These bags and their contents are organized and stuffed by Socks for Seniors volunteers in December each year, but the work starts much sooner when volunteers meet to organize items and preparation donations for the bags.

It's never too early to start preparations for 2023. We created a gift list on Amazon for needed items. The list will change throughout the year.

HISTORY
Socks for Seniors OK began in 2013 when founder, Sue McMillan and one other volunteer delivered gift bags containing socks and other personal items to 127 Seniors in 3 local nursing homes. When they saw the excitement that such a small gift gave to the Seniors and were told this was the only gift they would receive Sue reached out the following year to add volunteers and contacted businesses to display large Christmas stockings for donations of socks, money and other items.
Each year the numbers of Seniors and items have grown, which includes socks, blankets, gloves, caps, scarves, toiletry items, books, etc.
In 2017 the VA Alzheimer and VA Nursing Home in Norman were added and a total of 1,497 packages were delivered to Seniors in the Oklahoma City area.
On February 26, 2018, Socks for Seniors OK became a formal 501(c)(3) charitable organization allowing solicitation of tax deductible gifts from their supporters. We are proud to be a 100% volunteer organization.
The number of Seniors and Veterans that we provide gifts to has stabilized to approximately 2,000 annually since 2019.
Socks for Seniors OK has been able to continue our cause with Grants and generous donations from numerous donors along with our small group of volunteers.
We will be preparing our gift bags for 25 Nursing Homes and 4 Assisted Living facilities starting the week of November 27 and will have everything delivered by December 7. All of these facilities are underserved and are so appreciative of our efforts. A Big Thank You to the Masonic Lodge 36 for providing their facility to assemble these gifts. Also, a Big Thank You to the Bethany First Assembly of God for the use of their "schoolhouse" for our monthly workdays.
